What are the Four Pillars?

A plain-English introduction to the calendar structure behind a Personal Pattern.

Four coordinates, not four predictions

In the Chinese calendrical tradition, a birth year, month, day, and hour are each represented by a pair of symbols: a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch. These four pairs are the Four Pillars, also called BaZi, or eight characters. They provide a traditional framework for interpretation, not a scientific personality diagnosis.

What the calculation gives you

A Personal Pattern shows the four pairs and their relationships to the Five Elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. The day stem supplies the name of the core element. Elemental balance is an interpretation of this structure, not a measurement of substances or energy inside your body.

How to use the result

Treat a reflection prompt as a question to test against your experience. When does it fit? When does it not? Keep your own observations alongside the chart. A pattern should help you notice something, not make a decision on your behalf.
